Wishcasting Wednesday

Jamie Ridler at jamieridlerstudios.ca asks:

What do you wish to take a break from?

I wish to take a break from television.  This may seem like a simple thing to take a break from, but sometimes it takes so much time away from all the other things that I want to be doing.  Lately, with all the rain here in New England and before that the cold weather, the tv and the computer were my best friend getting me through the day with 3 little ones.  I would have more time to clean and do laundry (not fun, but necessary), to craft, to sew, complete projects, read, plan and start my garden, playing and learning about herbs and aromatherapy, and so much more that I could write about, but I just can't think of all of them.  Most importantly I would be spending more quality time with my children and be a happier person all around.

Growing up we were never allowed to watch too much tv.  After school we got a 1/2 hour while we had a snack, then it was time to play, do home work or anything but tv.  I don't know when things changed, maybe college, maybe just regular adulthood, but I now watch tv more than I read or do anything at all.  The only other thing that I do more is play on the computer.  That is the other thing that I wish to take a break from.  It is almost as bad as tv if not worse.

I wish to allow myself a certain amount of tv time and computer time so that things that I want to accomplish can get done.

  2. Amy, what a brilliant wish and now I want to change mine! TV is an easy, acceptable escape. Computer, too. The only thing better than flopping in front of the tube to hide from life is diving into a bag of cookies. Good for you for noticing it!

By turning off the tv, you'll be more in the present and connected with your family and yourself. You'll read more and maybe even nap with those little ones (or experiment with essential oil blends)! I applaud your wish!

  4. TV and the computer can be addicting--I find I'm spending too much time in the blogosphere. Now I'm putting a timer next to me so I can limit my computer time. As Amy wishes for herself, I wish for her also.

  5. We don't have television in our house. After awhile you don't really miss it. As Amy wishes for herself, so I wish for her as well.

Why is it such an insidious habit? I will go weeks not watching much, amazed and fulfilled by all i can enjoy when NOT using my time for television (or the computer) and then it creeps back in ...

guess it is like anything else ... a practice!

  7. I too have a problem with the tv and computer. However I know the days of summer are coming when it will be nothing but re-runs. My dvr will be so empty! lol

  8. Oh a TV diet is a healthy thing. It may feel strange at first but once you get unplugged you'll find it opens up more room for creativity and connection.

As Amy wishes for herself I so lovingly wish this for her also.
